About the Art
This work centers on self-love, honoring the practice of giving yourself flowers while recognizing the care it takes to hold them. It reflects the balance of celebrating oneself while remaining mindful of one’s thorns, acknowledging that Black love begins with self-awareness, gentleness, and grace.
About the Artist
Ishmael McKinney is a self-taught photographer and videographer based in Columbus, Ohio, originally from Baltimore, Maryland. He began his creative journey in Dayton, Ohio, through the Dayton Access Television Station, where he first explored visual storytelling. His photography captures real, human moments with a raw and intentional aesthetic, using minimal editing to preserve the honesty of each subject. Specializing in portrait and concert photography, Ishmael focuses on the emotion, energy, and connection within each frame.
Deeply rooted in community, he is committed to documenting and uplifting Black, Brown, and BIPOC experiences, particularly those in the Midwest that are often overlooked.
